Chad Tyler’s scenic design displays techniques of “green” theatre and a Zef aesthetic. The artist recycled numerous stock platforms from Krannert storage and rope. His arrangement of materials creates a compelling landscape, able to be shifted by the actors on stage. “The design began with examinations into the nature of this island – thinking through what was on the island prior to contact and how it was transformed...” Below is a gallery of research images from Tyler’s exploration of text and contradictions within the space. Tyler drew inspiration of the culture from art of Roger Ballen and Mike Brodie. In his efforts to capture a “Earthy and Ephemeral quality,” the artist conceptualized using a monochromatic palette. The addition of color from other design elements allows the pigments to take on a whole new meaning. The designer’s vision draws audience attention to human influence of nature, landscape, and narrative.
